Sundar Pichai Net Worth Gets a Bump With Salary Boost

Sundar Pichai, an Indian-American technology executive, currently serves as the CEO of Alphabet, the parent company of Google. His full name is Pichai Sundararajan. Pichai’s net worth in 2020 is estimated at between $600 million and $1.2 billion. 

Alphabet is also the parent of self-driving company Waymo and drone delivery service provider Wing. The other Alphabet businesses that fall under Pichai’s purview are video site YouTube, wireless service provider Google Fi, balloon internet technology provider Loon, and life-science business Verily. 

Pichai net worth grew dramatically with his 2019 salary boost.

Pichai received $650,000 in annual base salary in 2019. But his total compensation for the year, comprising mostly of stock grants, hit $281 million. Pichai became Alphabet CEO in December 2019. The board tapped him for that top job after Larry Page and Sergey Brin stepped down from their active roles of overseeing day-to-day running of the conglomerate. Page served as Alphabet CEO while Brin served as its president.

Currently, Pichai doubles up as the CEO of both Alphabet and its largest subsidiary Google. Pichai’s net worth could soar even higher in 2020, considering that his promotion to Alphabet CEO came with a huge salary bump.

The time-based stock grant requires Pichai to stay with Alphabet for the next three years. The performance-based stock award requires Pichai to run Alphabet well enough that its shares would perform better than the S&P 100 Index. Pichai’s net worth  to sour in 2020 if he hits those performance targets. 

Some Alphabet shareholders, however, recently challenged Pichai’s generous compensation package. 

Before taking the helm at Google in August 2015, Pichai served as the company’s product chief. Pichai joined Google in 2004, working on some of the company’s popular products. As Google’s chief product officer, Pichai oversaw projects such as Android, Google Chrome, Chrome OS, Gmail, and Google Maps.
